In plain English: Office is installed and has a product key, but it hasn’t been activated with Microsoft (or with your organisation’s activation server) yet. Until it is, Office runs on a temporary grace period so you can keep working while activation completes.
Is 0x4004F00C an error or a warning?

Before fixing anything, confirm which product is in grace. You’ll use Office’s built-in licensing script, ospp.vbs.

What Happens When the Grace Period Ends?
When the grace period runs out without activation, the licence status changes from OOB_GRACE to NOTIFICATIONS and Office goes into reduced functionality mode. You can still open and print documents, but you can’t edit, save changes or create new files, and every app shows a red warning bar:
Your files are never deleted. As soon as Office is activated, editing comes straight back. For volume-licensed copies, Microsoft’s KMS documentation explains that KMS clients have a 25-day window before activation notifications appear, which gives them time to find the KMS server.
How to Fix Office Error 0x4004F00C: 8 Fixes
Work through these in order. Fix 1 solves most cases. Run every command from an administrator Command Prompt in the Office16 folder, as shown above.
Fix 1: Activate Office with ospp.vbs
If Office simply hasn’t activated yet, tell it to activate now. Make sure you’re connected to the internet, then run:
cscript ospp.vbs /actClose and reopen Word or Excel. The activation warning should disappear. If you see a different error code instead of success, note it and continue below.
Fix 2: Re-enter your product key
If the wrong key is installed, or the key didn’t save correctly, install your key again and activate it:

Fix 3: Fix date, time, firewall and proxy settings
- Date and time: Settings › Time & language › Date & time. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically, then select Sync now.
- VPN and proxy: disconnect any VPN, and turn off Use a proxy server in Settings › Network & internet › Proxy (unless your IT team requires it).
- Firewall and antivirus: pause third-party firewalls or security suites while you activate, then turn them back on.
- Run

Fix 4: Remove leftover or unused product keys
If /dstatus shows a product you don’t use sitting in OOB_GRACE, such as an old trial or an extra app, remove its key. Find the Last 5 characters of installed product key line in that licence block, then run:
cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:XXXXXReplace XXXXX with those five characters, then run /dstatus again. Only remove keys for products you don’t want; removing your main key will leave Office unlicensed. If an entire old Office version is still installed, uninstall it from Settings › Apps › Installed apps and restart.
Fix 5: Point volume Office to your KMS server
If /dstatus shows VOLUME_KMSCLIENT in the licence description, Office activates against your organisation’s KMS host, not Microsoft. Connect to your work network (or work VPN), then set the KMS host and activate:

Fix 6: Activate by phone
If online activation keeps failing for a retail or MAK key, for example because the key has reached its online activation limit after reinstalls, activate by phone:

If you’ve tried everything and activation still fails, run cscript ospp.vbs /dhistoryacterr to see the activation failure history, and note any error codes it shows.
