Type the code exactly as Windows or Office shows it, for example 0xC004F213. You can leave out the “0x”.

What it means

Windows checked for a digital licence or product key that matches your PC’s hardware and didn’t find one. It almost always appears after a major hardware change, such as a new motherboard.

Common causes

Replacing the motherboard or other major components
A PC repaired or rebuilt by a shop
Windows reinstalled on new hardware with no key

How to fix it

Open Settings › System › Activation and select Troubleshoot. The button only appears while Windows isn’t activated. Choose I changed hardware on this device recently and sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your licence.

If you have the original product key, enter it: Open Settings › System › Activation, select Change product key and enter a genuine 25-character key that matches your edition.

If Windows came preinstalled (an OEM licence), it’s tied to the old motherboard and usually can’t be moved.

If none of this works, the key itself is the problem: you’ll need a new genuine key for your edition.

What it means

Your digital licence or key is for a different edition of Windows than the one installed, for example a Home licence on a PC where you installed Pro.

Open Settings › System › Activation and select Troubleshoot. The button only appears while Windows isn’t activated. It can detect which edition your digital licence is for.

Reinstall the edition your licence covers, or enter a key for the edition you have installed.

What it means

Windows couldn’t find a valid licence for this PC. It’s common on new installs, after hardware changes, or when Windows was installed without a key.

A major hardware change
A licence that belongs to a different PC

How to fix it

Open Settings › System › Activation and select Troubleshoot. The button only appears while Windows isn’t activated.

What it means

Windows couldn’t find a valid licence, often after a major hardware change, or it couldn’t reach the activation service.

Check your internet connection, and make sure a firewall, VPN or proxy isn’t blocking Microsoft’s activation servers.

What it means

Microsoft groups all of these codes together: the product key you entered can’t activate this copy of Windows. The key may be blocked, invalid, for another product, or not valid in your region.

A blocked, revoked or counterfeit key
A key for a different product or edition
Activation servers were busy straight after an upgrade

How to fix it

If you’ve just upgraded, wait a while and select Activate again; the servers may have been busy.

Check your edition in Settings › System › About. A Home key only activates Home, and a Pro key only activates Pro.

Open Settings › System › Activation, select Change product key and enter a genuine 25-character key that matches your edition.

Keys bought from unauthorised sellers are often blocked. Ask the seller for a replacement or a refund.

What it means

The licensing service says the product key isn’t valid. Usually it’s been mistyped, or it’s a key for a different product.

Common causes

A typing mistake (B and 8, or G and 6, are easy to confuse)
A key for another product, edition or Office version
An Office key entered into Windows, or the reverse

How to fix it

Check every character. Genuine keys never contain the letters A, E, I, L, O, S, U or Z, or the digits 0, 1 or 5.

Check your edition in Settings › System › About. A Home key only activates Home, and a Pro key only activates Pro.

Open Settings › System › Activation, select Change product key and enter a genuine 25-character key that matches your edition. For Office, use cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey: instead.

What it means

Microsoft’s activation server has blocked this key, most often because it’s been used on more devices than its licence allows.

Common causes

A key shared or resold and used on many PCs
A volume key leaked online
A key from an unauthorised seller

How to fix it

Contact the seller or PC manufacturer that supplied the key.

If Windows came with the PC, look for the original key on a sticker or in the box.

If a repair shop reinstalled Windows, ask them which key they used.

What it means

The key is invalid or belongs to a different version of Windows. On work PCs it can also mean the KMS server can’t activate this version.

Check your edition in Settings › System › About. A Home key only activates Home, and a Pro key only activates Pro.

Common causes

A single-PC key installed on a second PC

How to fix it

If you moved a valid retail key to new hardware, remove it from the old PC first, then try activating offline: Activate without internet: run slmgr /dti for the Installation ID and get a Confirmation ID from Microsoft’s Product Activation Portal.

Contact the seller with your order number; a genuine seller will help or replace the key.

A Multiple Activation Key (MAK) has used up all the activations it was issued with.

What it means

Windows couldn’t connect to Microsoft’s activation servers.

Common causes

No internet connection
A firewall, VPN or proxy blocking activation

Check your internet connection, and make sure a firewall, VPN or proxy isn’t blocking Microsoft’s activation servers.

Restart the PC, then select Activate again, or run slmgr /ato in Command Prompt as administrator.

For 0xC004FC03 you can also activate without internet: Activate without internet: run slmgr /dti for the Installation ID and get a Confirmation ID from Microsoft’s Product Activation Portal.

What it means

Windows couldn’t look up the activation server’s address. The PC is offline or its DNS isn’t working.

Common causes

No internet connection
DNS settings or a proxy blocking lookups

How to fix it

Check your internet connection, and make sure a firewall, VPN or proxy isn’t blocking Microsoft’s activation servers.

Restart your router, or switch to a different network such as a phone hotspot.

Restart the PC, then select Activate again, or run slmgr /ato in Command Prompt as administrator.

Activate without internet: run slmgr /dti for the Installation ID and get a Confirmation ID from Microsoft’s Product Activation Portal.

What it means

An activation attempt is already running. Windows won’t start another until it finishes.

Common causes

Selecting Activate more than once
A slow connection to the activation servers

How to fix it

Wait a few minutes for the current attempt to finish.

Restart the PC, then select Activate again, or run slmgr /ato in Command Prompt as administrator.

Wait and try again later; there’s nothing wrong with your key.

Restart the PC, then select Activate again, or run slmgr /ato in Command Prompt as administrator.

What it means

A server or licensing error, often involving the Microsoft Store licence service.

What it means

The PC is set to activate against a company KMS server but can’t reach one. On a home PC it usually means a volume (KMS) key was installed.

A volume or Enterprise key on a home PC
A work PC away from the company network
Unofficial “KMS activators” that have stopped working

How to fix it

If it’s a work or school PC, contact your IT department. The PC may need to connect to your organisation’s network.

On a home PC, replace the KMS key with a retail key: Open Settings › System › Activation, select Change product key and enter a genuine 25-character key that matches your edition. For Office, use ospp.vbs /inpkey:.

The KMS server hasn’t been contacted by enough PCs yet, so it isn’t activating any. Windows clients need 25, servers and Office need 5.

Administrators: check the count on the host with slmgr /dlv, or use a MAK key instead.

How to fix it

Generate a fresh Installation ID (slmgr /dti or ospp.vbs /dinstid) and request a new Confirmation ID.

Enter it as one continuous number with no spaces or dashes.

This isn’t a failure: Office is installed but not activated yet, and is running on a temporary grace period.

How to fix it

Open Command Prompt as administrator: search cmd, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

Go to the Office folder: cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16".

Install your key with cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey: and run cscript ospp.vbs /act.

If none of this works, the key itself is the problem: you’ll need a new genuine key for your edition.

The licensing service can’t find a licence for this key in the installed edition. Typical cases are a full key on a Windows Server evaluation edition, or a retail Office key on a volume Office install.

How to fix it

For Windows Server, check your edition with DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition and convert it with DISM /online /Set-Edition.

For Office, check the channel (RETAIL or VOLUME) with cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus and use a key that matches.

If none of this works, the key itself is the problem: you’ll need a new genuine key for your edition.

Windows: from the command line

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run slmgr /ato to try activating; any error appears in a pop-up. slmgr /dlv shows detailed licence information, including the edition and licence channel.

Office: with ospp.vbs

Activation error codes look random, but the first part tells you a lot about where the problem is:

Licensing service error

The most common group. Comes from the Windows licensing service: key, edition, KMS and activation problems.

0x8007

Windows system error

A general Windows error, such as access denied, DNS failures or damaged files, that stopped activation.

0x803F

Digital licence and Store

Problems with digital licences and the Microsoft Store licensing service.

0x4004

Information, not failure

A warning rather than an error, such as Office running in its grace period (0x4004F00C).

Five Fixes That Solve Most Activation Errors

If your code isn’t listed, or you want to try the basics first, these fixes solve the majority of activation problems we see:

Run the Activation troubleshooter

In Settings › System › Activation, select Troubleshoot. It fixes edition mismatches and hardware-change problems automatically.

Check your edition matches your key

A Home key won’t activate Pro, and a retail key won’t activate a volume or Enterprise install.

Fix your date, time and connection

Wrong clocks and blocked connections cause many 0x8007 and KMS errors.

Re-enter the key as administrator

Run slmgr /ipk then slmgr /ato for Windows, or ospp.vbs /inpkey then /act for Office.

Repair system files

Run sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then restart and try again.

When You Need a New Product Key

Some errors can’t be fixed with settings, because the problem is the key itself. You’ll need a new genuine key if:

The key is blocked (0xC004C003, 0xC004C060 and related codes).
The key has already been used on the maximum number of PCs (0xC004C008, 0xC004C770, 0x803FA071).
You have an OEM licence tied to an old motherboard you’ve replaced (0xC004F213 after a motherboard swap).
You were sold an Enterprise, volume or KMS key for a home PC (0xC004F074, 0xC004F00F, 0x8007232B).
Windows or Office was installed without a key and the grace period is over (0x803F7001, 0xC004F009).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does error 0xC004F213 mean?

Windows couldn’t find a licence matching your hardware, usually after a motherboard change. Run the Activation troubleshooter and choose I changed hardware on this device recently, or enter a valid product key.

What does error 0x803F7001 mean?

Windows couldn’t find a valid licence for the PC. Enter a genuine 25-character key in Settings > System > Activation, or run the Activation troubleshooter if you upgraded from a genuine copy.

What does error 0xC004C008 mean?

The product key has already been used on another device, or on more devices than allowed. You’ll need a key for each device.

What does error 0xC004F074 mean?

No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. On a home PC it usually means a volume key was installed; replace it with a retail key. On a work PC, connect to your organisation’s network.

What does Office error 0x4004F00C mean?

Office is installed but not yet activated and is running on a grace period. Install your key with ospp.vbs /inpkey and activate with ospp.vbs /act.

Where do I find my Windows activation error code?

Open Settings > System > Activation. The code appears in the message under Activation state. You can also run slmgr /ato in an administrator Command Prompt.

Can a wrong date or time cause activation errors?

Yes. A wrong clock can cause 0x80072F8F and KMS errors such as 0xC004F06C. Sync your time in Settings > Time & language > Date & time.

Do I need a new key to fix an activation error?

Not always. Connection, time and edition problems can be fixed without a new key. You need a new key when yours is blocked, already used, or tied to old hardware.

Why does my key say it’s blocked?

Keys are blocked when they’ve been used on too many devices, leaked or sold without authorisation. Contact the seller, or buy a genuine key from an authorised source.
